Artifact Description

The few one-of-a-kind objects found on the wreck of the SS Republic site are suggestive of personal possessions stowed with the passengers' belongings or perhaps shipped in reduced quantities as limited consignments. Counted among these exclusive pieces are three porcelain vases, the smallest featuring a budding flower motif and an under-glaze cobalt blue decoration, typifying French manufacture. This delicate vase, like the other porcelains aboard the Republic is very likely the product of one of the many 19th-century French porcelain factories that catered to the American market, producing reasonably priced wares that appealed to the average consumer.
